86% of Americans Approve of Black-White Marriage

In 1958, only 4% of Americans approved of black-white marriage. In 1961, the year of our President's birth, about 10% of the nation approved. Today 86% of the nation approves of black-white marriages. God Bless America!

The numbers would be higher, but only 66% of those over 65 approve of black-white marriage.  Also only 78% of those that never attended college approve.  These two groups are driving the number down.  I suspect this is why only 77% of Republicans approve.  There is hope. 91% of my age group approves and 98% of the 18-29 year old coming behind me approves.  [Record-High 86% Approve of Black-White Marriages, Gallup]

Notice the question was blacks and whites, not "interracial marriage".  There is no word on what the approval of Hispanic and Caucasian marriage.  This is not surprising. Hispanics were not on the census until 1980.  Beforehand the 1970 census asked if people were Mexican, Puerto Rican, Cuban, Central or South American, or "other Spanish".[2]  The change was made so that the Office of Management and Budget could get "useful data".  Several minor categories needed to be combined into one major category.[3] My point is that as much as I personally would like to see a more specific or broader poll question, I understand historically why this is not possible.
