St. Anthony and the Centaur

When he was ninety St. Anthony was tempted to vain-glory, thinking he was the first to dwell in the desert. In obedience to a vision he set forth to find his predecessor. On his road he met with a demon in the form of a centaur. Later on he spied a tiny old man with horns on his head. "Who are you?" asked Antony. "I am a corpse, one of those whom the heathen call satyrs, and by them were snared into idolatry." This is the Greek story (b) which makes both centaur and satyr unmistakably demons, one of which tries to terrify the saint, while the other acknowledges the overthrow of the gods. With St. Jerome the centaur may have been a demon; and may also have been "one of those monsters of which the desert is so prolific." At all events he tries to show the saint the way. As for the satyr he is a harmless little mortal deputed by his brethren to ask the saint's blessing. One asks, on the supposition that the Greek is the original, why St. Jerome changes devils into centaurs and satyrs. It is not surprising that stories of St. Anthony meeting fabulous beasts in hismysterious journey should spring up among people with whom belief in such creatures lingered on, as belief in fairies does to the present day. The stories of the meeting of St. Paul and St. Anthony, the raven who brought them bread, St. Anthony being sent to fetch the cloak given him by "Athanasius the bishop" to bury St. Paul's body in, St. Paul's death before he returned, the grave dug by lions, are among the familiar legends of the Life. It only remains to add that belief in the existence of St. Paul seems to have existed quite independently of the Life. [1]

Random Thoughts: Angels and Demons 2

Something must anchor angels and demons to the Earth. The Earth is moving about 67,000 mph around the Sun. The Sun is moving about 483,000 mph around the center of the Milky Way Galaxy. The Milky Way Galaxy is moving about 1.3 million mph. We are bound to these speed demons by gravitational forces. Something must bind the spirits here. Something to think about whenever someone says that angels are not bound by gravity.  [1]

If the curse applies to all of the physical cosmos, perhaps some creature on some other planet in a distant galaxy asked "why" as their family began to die for the first time. The answer of course is that Adam and Eve sinned in the Milky Way Galaxy while orbiting the Sun on a planet called Earth. Cunningly Satan found the two meter wide small thermal exhaust port. [2] [3]

Man says a ghost beat his wife

A Wisconsin man accused of beating his wife is saying that a ghost did it.

Police in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin arrested Michael West, 41, after responding to a domestic disturbance on the night of Jan. 15, according to a criminal complaint posted by thesmokinggun.com.

West's wife Rebecca was "crying very hard and was bleeding out of her nose" when cops arrived at the scene, according to the complaint.

She told police her husband punched her in the face several times and strangled her until her vision went black after an argument about financial issues.

When police asked Michael West what happened, he said his wife had fallen several times, injuring her face.

When police asked about the marks on her neck, West changed his story.

"A ghost did it," he said, according to the complaint.

Cops said West cursed and tried to resist as they arrested him.

This "ghost" story reminded me of this story told by Richard Baxter.  Baxter describes a demon that impersonated the atheist Sadducee husband of a believing wife.  The spiritual wife noticed immediately that this was not her real husband.  What proceeded was a haunting by the demon.

But the night following, the gentlewoman, with several other godly women, being in the house, the noise of whirlwind began again, with more violence than formerly, and the apparition walked in the chamber, having an insufferable stench like that of a putrified carcass, filling the room with a thick smoak, smelling like sulphur, darkening the light of the fire and candle, but not quite extinguishing it; sometimes going down the stairs, and coming up again with a fearful noise, disturbing them at their prayers, one while with the sound of words which they could not discern, other while striking them so that the next morning their faces were black with the smoak, and their bodies swollen with bruises.

Thereupon they left the house, lest they should tempt the Lord by their over-bold staying in such danger, and sent this Atheist the sad news of this apparition; who coming to England about May last, expressed more love and and respect to his wife than formerly; yet telling her, that he could not believe her relation of what she had seen, as having not a power to believe any thing but what himself saw; and yet would not hitherto go to his house to make trial, but probably will e’er long, for that he is naturally of an exceeding rash and desperate spirit.

Random Thought: Angels and Demons

Only Joking, but...

Satan wishes for omnipresence or to be affected by gravity. If you were tempted an hour ago. You are about 67,000 miles away from where you once were. [1]  Satan must be in great shape to keep up.

Does anyone know if anyone has written on how angels and demons "stick" to the Earth? It is a miracle in itself for a supernatural being to stay on a moving natural object without natural forces.

Demon Duck of Doom

Australian scientists have uncovered evidence that a giant duck-like creature which lived more than 12 million years ago may have included wombats and other large animals on its dinner menu.

Dr Steve Wroe from the Australian Museum has been studying a recently discovered, nearly complete skull of Bullockornis planei, which suggests the 2.5 metre high giant bird had quite a different diet than first thought.

These huge birds belonged to a group called the dromornithids and were unique to Australia as far as palaoentologists know. Towering above most other living creatures of the time, they were once some of the most conspicuous members of the Australian fauna. They lived until at least as recently as 50,000 years ago and some almost certainly overlapped with the first humans.

"Previously we only knew this group, called the Thunderbirds, from bones such as the legs, but not from the skull material," Dr Wroe said.

It was thought the creature, which would have weighed up to 300kg, was a herbivore and used its giant beak to tear off branches and crack open nuts.

However the complete skull found in the Northern Territory at Bullock Creek two years ago suggests it ate flesh.

Dr Wroe said the head and jaws showed evidence of very large muscles, and the head is very large compared to the body. "Birds need a head big enough to swallow food whole, because they can't chew it up. It has such a large head and beak that I would have thought that unless it was eating meat - or maybe coconuts - you'd be looking at a serious over-design problem.

"My hunch is that it ate plant material, but also significant amounts of meat - it was formidable enough that it could have eaten whatever it wanted.

"It was probably omnivorous, surviving on a mixed diet of giant wombats and the different species of kangaroos and possums that were about at the time as well as fruit and nuts," he said.

The creature probably died out as a result of being outcompeted by another animals, or the climate and habitat changing fundamentally.

Lady Apostle Helen Ukpabio is coming to Houston

The genesis of these blogs about Nigerian Lady Apostle Helen Ukpabio has to do with her conference that she is holding in Houston, Texas from March 14th - 25th.[1][2]  She is a noted exorcist of child witches. Earlier she attempted to use Nigerian law to ban all criticism of her.

In the lawsuit, Ms. Ukpabio alleges that the state law infringes on her freedom of religion. She seeks 2 billion naira (about $13 million) in damages, as well as “an order of perpetual injunction restraining the respondents” from interfering with or otherwise denouncing her church’s “right to practice their religion and the Christian religious belief in the existence of God, Jesus Christ, Satan, sin, witchcraft, heaven and hellfire.”

In other words, in the name of religious freedom, Ms. Ukpabio seeks a gag order on anyone who disagrees with her.

She has made a number of claims and I will survey them over the next few days.
