Zimmerman/Martin Timeline [a work in progress]

Note the clocks from Martin's cell phone, the 911 call center, the police report, and the security cameras are most likely not in sync.

Unknown Martin began walking to the
7-11.  This source [2], says he began walking at around 6:30 PM. The time stamp on the 7-11 video puts him at the 7-11 at 6:23 PM.

He then called her back at 6:54 p.m. and said he was walking with his hood up.

[It is unclear which phone call these two sentences reference.] According to her audio testimony, she said Martin told her "I think this dude is following me," and slowed down to see who it was. She says she then told him to "be careful and just run home." [19]

7:00 PM* Martin arrived back at the gated community at about this time.[2]
7:04 PM Martin received a phone call from his girlfriend [2] [3]
7:09.34 PM Zimmerman saw Martin and called 911[2] [6]

7:11 PM* Zimmerman said that Martin was running.  He left his vehicle to pursue.  The 911 operator asked if Zimmerman was following Martin.  Zimmerman said "yeah" and was told by the operator, "OK, we don't need you to do that."  Zimmerman said "OK". [13]

[This will be my only commentary.  It is important to note that this moment is why the Zimmerman family insists that George Zimmerman did not follow Martin.  From this moment till the end of the 911 call, Zimmerman had no idea where Martin was.  The family maintains that this continued until Martin approached from behind.  According to Martin's girlfriend, Martin did not know that Zimmerman was unaware of his whereabouts.  According to her, Martin still believed that he was being followed.]

At his bond, Zimmerman gave an apology to Martin's family.  He described his understanding of that night's events.

"I wanted to say I am sorry for the loss of your son. I did not know how old he was. I thought he was a little bit younger than I am. I did not know if he was armed or not," Zimmerman said in his first public comments about the shooting. [21]
At the time, Zimmerman described the age of Martin: "He's got button on his shirt, late teens."  "It’s a home it’s 1950, oh crap I don’t want to give it all out, I don’t know where this kid is."[22]

7:12 PM Last call Martin received from his girlfriend.[2] [3]

Trayvon Martin's phone records
Martin, who was in town from Miami to visit his father in Sanford, called his 16-year-old girlfriend in Miami several times on Feb. 26, including just before the shooting, Crump said. The discovery of the lengthy conversations, including one moments before the shooting, was made over the weekend by Martin's father by checking his son's cell phone log, Crump said.

The teenager told the girl on his way back from the store he'd taken shelter the rain briefly at an apartment building in his father's gated community, Crump said. Martin then told the girl he was being followed and would try to lose the person, Crump said.

"She says: 'Run.' He says, 'I'm not going to run, I'm just going to walk fast,'" Crump said, quoting the girl.

After Martin encountered Zimmerman, the girl thought she heard a scuffle "because his voice changes like something interrupted his speech," Crump said. The phone call ended before the girl heard gunshots. [4]

7:14 PM Zimmerman ended his 911 call [2] [6] According to Zimmerman, he began walking back towards his vehicle.

In an account given to the Sanford police, George Zimmerman said that he lost sight of Trayvon and was returning to his S.U.V. when the teen approached him from behind and asked him if he had a problem. Mr. Zimmerman said the two exchanged words before Trayvon punched him to the ground, then repeatedly slammed his head into the sidewalk in the moments leading up the shooting. When police arrived on the scene, he told officers that he had cried out for help but no one had come to help. [7]

Zimmerman's father added:

When George tried to move away from the pavement onto the grass, the gun inside his waistband became visible. Mr. Zimmerman said that George believes Trayvon saw the pistol and said, “You are going to die tonight.” Moments later, George pulled out his pistol and shot Trayvon in the chest.  [7]

A police source has stated that Zimmerman said Martin tried to take his gun.[13]

Moments after the shooting Zimmerman told eyewitnesses he shot Martin in self defense. He later told officers his head was being pounded into the pavement and that he feared for his life, but that it was only when Martin seemed to reach for the gun wedges in his waistband that Zimmerman drew his weapon and fired directly into Martin's chest -- killing him.  [23]

4/11/12 on the Piers Morgan Tonight, George Zimmerman's brother described the struggle this way.

The reality is George nor any other neighborhood watch person goes out and becomes a neighborhood watch person because they are going to be in the following order: surprise attacked, punched so hard in the nose that their nose is broken, sat on their chest using their last available breaths to call and scream for help.

This is a series of not just physical but psychological injuries that are happening to someone. With a person who's 6'3" sitting on their chest, using his entire body weight to cover the mouth and nose, the broken nose, of the person who is screaming out for their life.

Now what you have is a situation where you're out of breath and you're losing consciousness. Now, what puts you in fear of your life is when you carry a gun and someone threatens to disarm you as you're becoming unconscious, you don't know if that person is really going to kill you or not. But if you are wrong about it, you are dead.

And you don't have a second chance to second guess that decision when you're losing consciousness, because someone is crushing your nose into your skull that's broken.

7:16 PM Last call Martin received from his girlfriend ends. His girlfriend said she did not hear the gunshot.[2]
7:16:11 PM First 911 call. [19]
7:16:41 PM Second 911 call.[19]
7:17 PM Police arrived on the scene and found Martin shot face down.  Zimmerman was found standing with his weapon holstered.   Zimmerman was bleeding from the nose and the back of the head. His shirt was wet and had grass stains on the back.  Martin received CPR. [5]
7:17:06 PM Third 911 call. [19]
7:17:15 PM Fourth 911 call. [19]
7:17:54 PM Fifth 911 call. [19]
7:18:00 PM Sixth 911 call. [19]
7:19:04 PM Seventh 911 call. [19]

The person who took the photograph of a bloodied Zimmerman, asking not to be identified, told ABC News exclusively that they did not see the scuffle that night, but did hear it. The person recalled seeing Martin's prostrate body on the wet grass and said the gunpowder burns on Martin's gray hoodie were clearly visible.

The photographer said that after the shooting, Zimmerman asked the photographer to call his wife. When the photographer asked him what to say, Zimmerman blurted out, "Man, just tell her I shot someone."
 [20]

7:17 PM-7:30PM* A second ambulance was en route to the shooting, but was cancelled because it was not needed.

“Do they have a second patient?” a man asks.

“That’s affirmative. There is a second patient,” a woman replies.

Moments later, a man says, “You can cancel the second rescue,” adding that Zimmerman had not been shot.
[18]

But the report also shows Zimmerman declined hospitalization the night of the shooting, and then declined the advice of his doctor to make a follow-up appointment with an ear nose and throat doctor. [23]

7:30 PM Martin is pronounced dead.[5]
He seems to be wearing
the same fleece as the earlier photo
7:52 PM Zimmerman was handcuffed, but not arrested.  He was brought to the police station.[8]
8:00 PM-1:00 AM* The police take Zimmerman's picture for evidence.[25]
10:15-10:45 PM Trayvon's father, Tracy Martin, and his girlfriend returned to her apartment after their dinner.  Tracy noticed that Trayvon was not home, but assumed that Trayvon was out to the movies with his 20 year old cousin.  (The night before the two of them had gone to the movies.) He called both their cell phones, but all calls went to voicemail.  The couple went to bed. [11]

February 27, 2012

1:00 AM* Zimmerman was questioned for five hours by the police.  He would have left the police station somewhere about this time. [10]
3:07 AM Partial Report was filed.  The "victim" by this point had been identified as Trayvon Benjamin Martin, 6 feet tall, 160 lbs, born 2/5/1995 in Miami, Florida.  The report also contained Martin's address and phone number. His parents had not at this point been successfully notified.  It is unknown what steps, if any, the police made to notify Martin's parents that their son was dead.[5]
The report also lists the crime as a “homicide/negligent manslaughter.”  The sherrif's office requested that charges be filed. The state attorney’s office held off pending further review. [15]

6:28 AM Civil Twilight [9]
6:52 AM Sunrise [9]
8:00 AM* When Tracy Martin awoke, Trayvon still was not home.  He called the 20 year old cousin who told Tracy that he had not seen Trayvon.  He next had his girlfriend call "juvenile justice" to see if Trayvon had been picked up.  The next call was to the Seminole County Sherrif's Department to see if Trayvon had been picked up by them.  The last call was to the non-emergency number at the Seminole County Sheriff’s department to report Trayvon missing. The department dispatched a unit.  Before 8:00am, three cars showed up: a police cruiser, an unmarked sedan and another official-looking car belonging to the chaplain. The detective asked for a photo of Trayvon.  After receiving the photo, he returned with a picture of Trayvon's body.  [12]  [11]
Unknown Zimmerman returned to the gated community and reenacted on camera his version of events.

The day after the shooting, George Zimmerman, according to his father, returned with at least three police officers to the Retreat at Twin Lakes, back to that grassy area where plaintive cries for help had gone unanswered. The investigators, accompanied by someone with a video camera, wanted him to re-enact the events of the night when the two strangers had stood their ground.

Mr. Zimmerman’s father watched from nearby. “They started where his vehicle was,” he recalled. “They walked him down the sidewalk and to the end of the sidewalk, to the street where he got an address and then walked him back towards his vehicle, near where the incident occurred.”
[14]

Unknown Zimmerman found out his nose was broken in the struggle with Martin. Joe Oliver, friend of George Zimmerman stated that Zimmerman did not know his nose was broken until the day after the shooting.

Joe Oliver, a friend of Zimmerman's, said Zimmerman told him he was "cleaned up by cops at the scene" that night before being taken to the station.

Oliver also said it was discovered the next day that Zimmerman's nose was broken.
[17]

A medical report compiled by the family physician of accused Trayvon Martin murderer George Zimmerman and obtained exclusively by ABC News found that Zimmerman was diagnosed with a "closed fracture" of his nose, a pair of black eyes, two lacerations to the back of his head and a minor back injury the day after he fatally shot Martin during an alleged altercation...

...The morning after the shooting, on Feb. 27, Zimmerman sought treatment at the offices of a general physician at a family practice near Sanford, Fla. The doctor notes Zimmerman sought an appointment to get legal clearance to return to work.

The record shows that Zimmerman also suffered bruising in the upper lip and cheek and lower back pain. The two lacerations on the back of his head, one of them nearly an inch long, the other about a quarter-inch long, were first revealed in photos obtained exclusively by ABC News last month.
[23]

Unknown  Joe Oliver has said that Zimmerman cried for days after shooting Martin.[21]

Unknown

The official report, prepared by the medical examiner in Volusia County, Fla., also found that the 17-year-old Martin had one other fresh injury – a small abrasion, no more than a quarter-inch in size – on his left ring finger below the knuckle. [24]

According to the document released on Thursday by prosecutors inFlorida, traces of the drug THC, the primary psychoactive ingredient of marijuana, were found in Martin's blood and urine during an autopsy on 27 February, the day after he was killed in a confrontation with George Zimmerman. [26]

PS - Here is a quick video walk through.

PSS - There is another version of events that the detectives told Tracy Martin, Trayvon Martin's father, Wednesday, February 29th. Listening to the 911 call and looking at Martin's phone records, it is unclear when Trayvon supposedly conversed with Zimmerman in his vehicle.

Detectives gave Tracy Martin, Trayvon’s father, an account of the events that Mr. Martin finds hard to believe. Trayvon's father, Tracy Martin, was told that Trayvon approached Mr. Zimmerman twice. First, he walked up to Mr. Zimmerman’s vehicle and asked why he was following him. Mr. Zimmerman denied following him. Trayvon walked away, and Mr. Zimmerman got out of his vehicle. Trayvon then approached him from behind a building and said, “What’s your problem, homie?” Mr. Zimmerman said he did not have a problem, and Trayvon attacked him. Trayvon hit Mr. Zimmerman and pinned him to the ground. Mr. Zimmerman pulled his gun as he was being beat and fired one shot. “You got me,” Trayvon said, falling back.   [7]  [12]

PSSS - I did not have enough information to place the seven 911 calls that were made that night. [7]

PSSSS - I tried to be thorough, but I find myself adding additional information that I forgot to include.  So if you see the post changing, it is probably not just your mind. Currently there are 15 sources.

PSSSSS - Times of the 911 calls are now in.  Up to 19 sources.

PSSSSSS- This is the earliest news story I have.  It is filmed less than 24 hours from the shooting.

  1. Please get your facts straight...Your words here - Zimmerman said that Martin was running. He left his vehicle to pursue. The 911 operator asked if Zimmerman was following Martin. Zimmerman said "yeah" and was told by the operator not to follow. Zimmerman said "OK".

He was not told "Not to follow" He was in fact told "We don't NEED you to do that".

  2. I was paraphrasing, but you have a fair point. I put the exact quote into the paragraph.
