Friday Quotes XIX

"I am aware that many object to the severity of my language; but is there not cause for severity? I will be as harsh as truth, and as uncompromising as justice." ~ William Lloyd Garrison

This is so American, I've seen Desparate Housewives. ~ Mrs. Victoria Beckam (In reference to her being invited to a houseparty.)

Genuine prayer is an act of worship. That is why it is not appropriate for it to be sponsored by civil government. The generic ceremonial prayers of civil religion and interfaith prayers are offensive to people of many faiths who take the scriptures of their diverse faiths seriously. ~ Bruce Prescott (This may the point that Prescott and I agree the most.)

Chance favors the prepared mind. ~ Louis Pasteur (Found while reading "The Hot Zone". I love that book.)

The richest one percent of this country owns half our country's wealth, five trillion dollars. One third of that comes from hard work, two thirds comes from inheritance, interest on interest accumulating to widows and idiot sons and what I do, stock and real estate speculation. It's bullshit. You got ninety percent of the American public out there with little or no net worth. I create nothing. I own. We make the rules, pal. The news, war, peace, famine, upheaval, the price per paper clip. We pick that rabbit out of the hat while everybody sits out there wondering how the hell we did it. Now you're not naive enough to think we're living in a democracy, are you buddy? It's the free market. And you're a part of it. You've got that killer instinct. Stick around pal, I've still got a lot to teach you. ~ Gordon Gekko (Michael Douglas) - Wall Street

In the beginning of a change, the Patriot is a scarce man, brave, hated and scorned. When his cause succeeds, however, the timid join him, for then it costs nothing to be a Patriot. ~ Mark Twain

"Live a good life. If there are gods and they are just, then they will not care how devout you have been, but will welcome you based on the virtues you have lived by. If there are gods, but unjust, then you should not want to worship them. If there are no gods, then you will be gone, but will have lived a noble life that will live on in the memories of your loved ones." ~ Marcus Aurelius (This helps you understand an Athiest mind so much. It is not so much that God must exist, but He also should be Just otherwise He is unworthy of my worship. Most Athiests would not worship the God of the Bible even if you proved His existance, simply for the crime of killing women for not having hymens. There is also a certain irrelevance to the existance of a god or gods.)

"The political brain is an emotional brain. It prefers conclusions that are emotionally satisfying rather than conclusions that match the data." ~ Drew Westen
